I don’t believe the media is too dependent upon polls. I think it’s a great way to gain knowledge on public opinion. However, the process of these polls can have a huge sampling error and misconstrue the true opinions of America. I also believe there is almost NO way the opinions in the United States on Obama is half and half. That is a VERY clear error in the poll. However, that is my own personal belief. I think it is acceptable to report these polls because there are many citizens that depend on these results. These citizens use this as a fortune teller for the future of the country.
Political party identification has never been really important to me. Growing up, my father was always set in his belief in the system and which party he belonged to, however I did not show any interest. I admit to not having nearly enough knowledge on the political system to state anything else, but I do wonder if it is even as important anymore as our textbooks say it is. My grandparents and parents held these decisions to be very important. However, in our house and around our friends, we do not talk party identification. We simply discuss the differences in opinion on how the country is run, what is right/wrong, and how it should be run.
My opinions are not based on my parents beliefs or friends beliefs. My opinions are focused on how they affect my family, my life, my finances, and my future.

I agree Political party identification isnt really important to me either. It is very important to my parents though. I guess its just the older generation because my friends do not seem to have much of a preference either. I think its mainly on the specific topic we are discussing. Although I have noticed most older people have a specific party. My beliefs are actually based on my parents beliefs. Mainly because growing up that is the way I was taught at home and at school so I guess all those years of learning that just stuck with me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on question #1, I think people are not too dependent on polls either, I think they are a great way to show people what's going on.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that over all American's are to dependent on political polls. Most people take them at face value and never look at the margain of error or how many and how the sample was chosen. In the reading on Chapter 6 I found something that caught my interest. The way that the opinion poll question are worded has a great deal to do with how people answer the survey.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with how your family discusses political issues, by not identifying whch party they favor. This would lead to a more indepth discussion.
I think that polling is a great way for people to understand the different political issues in this country. However, I believe that when the media reports the outcomes they can word it in a way that makes it seem different than it actually is. Which, I suppose, in actuality makes it hard to tell when the polls are truly correct or not.
ReplyDeletePolitical identification is also not important to me. I don't think it should be important to anyone. It takes away from the important issues being voted on.
I love your answer to question 1. Polls are definitely a great source for gaining information on public opinion. I, too, believe that there is a lot of error that never gets reported involving polls. I always thought it was abnormal that Obama's approval versus disapproval rate was almost 50/50. I think that news channels say that to avoid confrontation, but I personally believe that poll results should be 100% honest. Other than errors, I think polls are very handy and convenient for gaining quick insight.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on your last statement finances ,etc. that should always e important. I agree about your parents and grandparents but it helped me to understand better them being with a party. I agree about the media they say in the book internet is the future but there are older people who can't use a computer.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about media is not too dependent upon polls. Polls are a great way to put our input in on a political issue. There is some error in polls though, but for the most part it should not be to far off. I am not concerned with political party either. It is not a concern of mine. I would rather base my decision on my own opinion, rather than go along with a political parties opinion.
